2025 Winter Challenge

Due March 6, 2025 at the guild meeting.

Applique … PLUS!

Why Applique? Applique gives you the opportunity to add layers to your quilt, add art work, and move out of the box (pieced squares and rectangles). You could make a pieced quilt and add applique to the corners, edges, or any position on your quilt.  This is an opportunity for a little artwork. It gives you an option to play with machine and/or hand applique techniques.

So, the challenge is to create a quilt and include your choice of anything that is hand appliqued, machine appliqued or both …PLUS…you must include at least one STAR. The star can be appliqued, embroidered, quilted, or pieced…it is your creation.  The quilt can have more than one star, but one is required. Pretty much anything goes, and you select the applique challenges you prefer to try and the star.

  • For some ideas, Google “applique quilts” and “star quilts” and look at Google Images. Or search on Pinterest, library books and any quilt store or internet sources. So many ideas for beautiful star quilts! Not just 5-point stars, any star will qualify.
  • Any method of construction is allowed: piecing with some applique, or all applique. Any embellishment is allowed, including paint, beading, lace, ribbon, or embroidery.
  • Put a 4” sleeve on the back of your quilt. Put a label on the back with your name.
  • Garments, purses, and tote bags ARE eligible for this challenge. All entries must be quilted—3 layers of fiber or fabric connected with thread.
  • THERE ARE NO SIZE RESTRICTIONS! A baby quilt is generally 36” x 45” or smaller. Yes, you can go big, but remember that display space is limited. We may have to fold your quilt to display it.
  • Due date: Thursday, March 6, 2025, at the PPQG meeting.
  • Your item must be available for display in March and April 2025, first at the Rolla Public Library then at Uniquely Yours.

Please participate. Let’s see if we can make this challenge the biggest and best ever. This project should be FUN and a CHALLENGE!
